Information We Collect
When you use Sacred Texts, we may collect the following information:
- —Account email address and authentication credentials
- —First and last name, provided at signup or in account settings
- —Profile information you choose to provide (such as a display name)
- —Usage data including pages visited, features used, and reading activity (chapters read, annotations visited)
- —Favorites you save and resources you generate (teaching outlines, devotionals, study guides)
- —Group information if you create or join a group — including group name, location, and website URL
- —Giving transaction records if your group uses the giving feature, processed through Stripe Connect
- —Email preferences and unsubscribe choices
- —Billing information, which is handled directly by Stripe and not stored on our servers
How We Use Your Information
Information collected is used for the following purposes:
- —Creating and managing your account
- —Processing subscription billing through Stripe
- —Syncing your reading progress, favorites, and AI-generated resources across sessions
- —Generating AI-powered resources (teaching outlines, devotionals, study guides) on your behalf
- —Managing your group membership and giving activity
- —Sending transactional emails (account verification, billing receipts, password resets)
- —Sending optional emails you have opted into (daily passage, community announcements)
- —Improving the product and understanding how features are used
- —Responding to support requests
We do not sell or share your personal information with third parties for marketing purposes.
Analytics and Tracking
Sacred Texts uses third-party analytics tools to understand how the product is used and to improve it over time. These tools may collect anonymized usage data, page views, and interaction events. When you are signed in, analytics events may be associated with your account identifier (not your email address directly).
- —Google Analytics — measures traffic, page views, and engagement patterns
- —PostHog — product analytics including feature usage, session recordings, and event tracking
- —Vercel Analytics — web performance and Core Web Vitals metrics
You can opt out of Google Analytics by using the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on. PostHog respects Do Not Track browser settings.
AI-Generated Content
Sacred Texts uses large language models provided by Anthropic to generate commentary annotations, teaching outlines, devotionals, and study guides. When you request a resource, relevant passage and commentary data is sent to Anthropic's API to generate a response. This data does not include your personal information. Anthropic's use of API data is governed by their Privacy Policy.
Third-Party Services
Sacred Texts uses the following third-party services, each governed by their own privacy practices:
- —Supabase — authentication and database hosting
- —Stripe — subscription payment processing and billing management
- —Stripe Connect — donation processing for groups (funds flow directly to connected accounts)
- —Vercel — application hosting and infrastructure
- —Anthropic — AI content generation (see AI-Generated Content section above)
- —Google Analytics — usage analytics
- —PostHog — product analytics
Email Communications
Sacred Texts may send you the following types of email:
- —Transactional emails — account verification, billing receipts, password resets. These are always sent and cannot be unsubscribed from.
- —Daily Passage emails — a brief scripture and reflection sent each day. Opt-in only.
- —Community and announcement emails — product updates and news. You are opted in by default and can unsubscribe at any time.
All non-transactional emails include an unsubscribe link. You can also manage your email preferences in your account settings.
Cookies
Sacred Texts uses cookies to manage authentication sessions and maintain your signed-in state across visits. Analytics tools (Google Analytics, PostHog) also set cookies to track anonymous usage patterns. You can disable cookies in your browser settings, though doing so may affect your ability to sign in or use certain features.
Data Security
We take reasonable measures to protect your information, including encrypted connections (HTTPS), secure credential storage through Supabase, and access controls that limit who can interact with production data. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Your Rights
You have the following rights regarding your personal data:
- —Access — you may request a copy of the personal data we hold about you
- —Correction — you may update your name and email through your account settings
- —Deletion — you may request deletion of your account and associated personal data at any time by contacting us
- —Unsubscribe — you may opt out of non-transactional emails at any time via the unsubscribe link in any email or through account settings
- —Portability — you may request an export of your personal data in a machine-readable format
We will process all requests within a reasonable timeframe, typically within 30 days.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the effective date at the top of this page. Continued use of Sacred Texts after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
